Since its creation in 1992, the NGO Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg, together with its partners, has been committed to the development of fairer and more sustainable trade between producers and workers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and consumers in Luxembourg. Fairtrade is a powerful lever for social change and helps to shape a fair and sustainable future society. The Fairtrade label guarantees consumers that each product bearing the label meets international fair trade criteria. The Fairtrade International movement, represented locally in Luxembourg by Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg, defines the standards in collaboration with international organisations and producer networks, which hold 50% of the votes. These standards are monitored by the independent body Flocert GmbH and are defined on the basis of the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social and ecological.
Fair Trade guarantees a minimum price for producers to cover the costs of sustainable production, pre-financing to enable future planning, an additional development premium to finance community projects, respect for social rights, a ban on the exploitation of children and the preservation of the environment.

By virtue of its DNA, fair trade is a recognised development tool that can contribute to the collective effort needed to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, in particular MDGs 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16 and 17.

In concrete terms, the day-to-day work of the NGO Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg is based on 4 key missions, namely raising awareness of Fair Trade in the broadest sense, educating people about global citizenship, developing the Fair Trade market in Luxembourg and lobbying national and European political bodies.
Fair trade is an illustration of good citizenship. It gives life to universal values such as respect, equality and justice. Fair Trade reactivates the power to act of everyone: producers, workers, processors, distributors, decision-makers and consumers.
